Truth, Politics, and Self-deception by Bernard Williams

چکیده
1 HERE are social practices and virtues which, if we are to characterize them, require us to mention the truth. This is not the same as mentioning what other people hold true (their beliefs), or just mentioning what we regard as true (our own beliefs). We may contrast in this respect two different virtues of truth, which may be labeled sincerity and accuracy. Sincerity (at the most basic level) merely implies that people say what they believe to be true, that is, what they believe. Accuracy implies care, reliability, and so on in discovering and coming to believe the truth. Among other questions that involve mentioning the truth, there are those concerning the properties of various methods of belief formation. Thus, if one is interested in the probable success of some military venture, augury is not a good method of acquiring true belief about it. It seems that there is a genuine property which some methods of inquiry have and others (such as augury) lack, that of being (roughly) truth-acquiring. It is dubious, though, that there is any interesting and non-trivial description of this property in general, as opposed to the form that it may take in particular sorts of cases. It may be suggested that we can say at least this much: that no method will have the desirable property if its efficacy in generating the belief that P would extend equally to generating

The neural basis of deception in strategic interactions
Communication based on informational asymmetries abounds in politics, business, and almost any other form of social interaction. Informational asymmetries may create incentives for the better-informed party to exploit her advantage by misrepresenting information. Using a game-theoretic setting, we investigate the neural basis of deception in human interaction. Unlike in most previous fMRI resea...
متن کاملSelf-deception's adaptive value: effects of positive thinking and the winner effect.
There is a puzzle about why self-deception, a process that obscures the truth, is so pervasive in human behavior given that tracking the truth seems important for our survival and reproduction. William von Hippel and Robert Trivers argue that, despite appearances, there is good reason to think that self-deception is an adaptation by arguing: (1) self-deception leads to a positive self-perceptio...
متن کاملBrain Mapping of Deception and Truth telling about an ecologically valid situation: An fMRI and polygraph investigation
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the neural correlates during deception and truth-telling using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) technique and an ecologically valid task, and compare the results to a standard polygraph examination. Materials & Methods: Eleven healthy subjects were randomly assigned to one of two conditions: “Lie Only Condition” (LOC) or “Truth Only ...

متن کاملCatching a Deceiver in the Act: Processes Underlying Deception in an Interactive Interview Setting
Lying is known to evoke stress and cognitive load. Both form cues to deception and lead to an increase in sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activity. But in reality, deceivers stick to the truth most the time and only lie occasionally. The present study therefore examined in an interactive suspect interview setting, whether deceivers still have clearly diverging cognitive and emotional processes...
